Moscow’s views of the war of tomorrow

Russia’s vision of “tomorrow’s war” differs sharply from NATO’s, envisioning a large-scale global confrontation with geoeconomic roots driven by the United States, rather than a localized conflict in north-eastern Europe. Moscow's core scenario involves a U.S.-led “21st century blitzkrieg” featuring waves of missile strikes coordinated with highly mobile, multi-domain forces, with a particular emphasis on maritime threats.

To counter this perceived threat, Russia is actively preparing for full mobilization warfare. This preparation includes modernizing its nuclear triad, reconstituting large ground formations, and tightly integrating its armed forces into the state’s socioeconomic fabric to ensure comprehensive national readiness. Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia's doctrinal innovation remains limited, with adaptations being primarily tactical rather than strategic, indicating that its formal doctrine is unchanged. This strategic outlook underscores Moscow's focus on systemic confrontation and long-term preparedness against a global adversary.
