Iran Is Now More Dangerous Than Ever

Foreign Policy | Rob Geist Pinfold

Iran’s June 8 missile attacks on northern Israel, followed by a U.S. military helicopter collision with an Iranian drone near the Strait of Hormuz, mark significant escalations in the region's “no war, no peace” paradigm. These incidents, alongside subsequent U.S. retaliatory strikes and Iranian missile attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan, demonstrate Tehran's fundamental recalibration.

The regime’s new leaders are more assertive, exhibiting higher risk tolerance and a willingness to use force, abandoning its traditional “strategic patience.” This shift follows Iran enduring joint Israeli and U.S. attacks on its soil without regime collapse, leading to a conclusion that it can survive such threats. Iran is now creating new rules of engagement, particularly regarding Israeli strikes in Lebanon, and reasserting its leadership of the Axis of Resistance. This revised strategy aims to compensate for systemic flaws and challenges faced since October 7, proving effective so far.
