U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met in New Delhi in late June to finalize a bilateral trade agreement. This high-stakes diplomatic effort aims to resolve remaining commercial sticking points, which U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor recently declared is in its final steps and ninety-nine percent complete.
The current negotiations follow a tentative agreement reached by both nations in February, which was subsequently disrupted. This initial progress was complicated after a U.S. Supreme Court decision invalidated President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, the very measures that had originally necessitated these trade negotiations. Although the impending deal suggests a potential thawing of broader U.S.-India relations, several unresolved sticking points still remain between the two sides. Ultimately, the successful conclusion of these final steps will determine whether the trade agreement can successfully resolve the trade disputes initiated by the original tariff policies.
