Ukraine Is Winning Its War On Russian Oil Refineries, But On The Front Line It’s A Bloody Slugfest

Eurasia Review  |  Mike Eckel

Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold the strategically vital Donetsk city of Kostyantynivka against relentless Russian assaults, threatening to breach the defensive "fortress belt" protecting the Slovyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration. Russian troops have infiltrated the city's outskirts using small assault groups, heavy artillery, and devastating glide bombs, with analysts predicting its fall within weeks.

This grueling urban battle contrasts sharply with Kyiv's highly successful long-range drone campaign, which has targeted oil refineries across the Russian Federation. These aerial strikes have triggered widespread gasoline shortages and fuel restrictions across nearly all of Russia's 83 regions, severely disrupting domestic supply chains. However, on the ground, Moscow has deployed an additional 11,000 soldiers to secure the city despite suffering close to 500,000 killed since February 2022. If the settlement falls, hostile forces will likely advance toward Druzhkivka and Kramatorsk, significantly undermining the defenders' lines in the eastern theater and opening the way for further territorial losses.
