Despite Chinese Mediation Efforts, Taliban-Pakistan Conflict Continues With New Strikes

Pakistan conducted strikes inside Afghanistan targeting Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan bases in Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar provinces, killing at least 28 civilians and injuring 49 others according to U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan reports. In response, the Taliban launched retaliatory strikes inside Pakistan, injuring several people in Balochistan Province before Pakistani forces shot down four rudimentary drones.

This escalation stems from a deep-seated bilateral rupture over cross-border militancy that boiled over into an "open war" in October 2025, following the Taliban's 2021 return to power. Despite diplomatic mediation efforts by China, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, the neighboring regimes remain locked in conflict. The latest hostilities followed a deadly insurgent gun and bomb attack on a Rangers facility in Karachi, Sindh province. Islamabad claims its operations killed 29 militants, while the Taliban asserts that 36 civilians died in strikes hitting residential homes, warning of a befitting response to any further provocations.
