Where Are America’s Aircraft Carriers Now?

United States Navy aircraft carrier availability remains constrained by statutory mandates and maintenance cycles, leaving roughly half of its 11 nuclear-powered supercarriers deployed while the remainder undergo scheduled overhauls or homeport transitions. The lead vessel, USS Nimitz (CVN-68), arrived at Naval Station Norfolk in July 2026 to serve as a training platform prior to its planned March 2027 decommissioning.
