Growing Russia-China-Iran Axis Poses Broader Challenge – Analysis

Eurasia Review  |  Alex Raufoglu

Russia, China, and Iran are increasingly forming a strategic alliance of convenience that US policymakers must confront as it seeks to disrupt global order, according to US experts. This axis, driven by shared opposition to US dominance, coordinates diplomatically, integrates militaries, and evades Western sanctions, yielding critical strategic dividends for the isolated Iranian regime.

Nadia Schadlow of the Hudson Institute urges Washington to stop treating these nations as separate regional theaters and find ways to drive wedges into their cooperation. While not a formal treaty, their interests align through conflict, particularly since Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and recent US/Israel airstrikes against Iran on February 28. Ilan Berman notes Iran supplies loitering munitions to Russia for the Ukraine war, and Western intelligence fears combat data will flow back, making Iran's arsenal more lethal. China's financial backing, with 90% of Iran's oil exports going to China, underpins this military trade and ensures Iran's solvency. Daniel Hoffman describes this as an "axis of dictatorships" aiming to reduce American global influence.
