Has the Iran War Been Worth It?

President Donald Trump announced a "great deal" on Truth Social Sunday, concluding nearly four months of war with Iran. This agreement authorizes the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade, confirmed by Iran's Supreme National Security Council. The formal signing is set for Switzerland, though the text remains unreleased.

This deal, not a full peace treaty, allows 60 days for further negotiations. The conflict began February 28 with a joint U.S.-Israel military operation that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and degraded Iran's nuclear program. However, Iranian retaliatory strikes significantly damaged U.S. installations, killed 13 American service members, wounded hundreds, and cost the Pentagon $29 billion. The war also increased domestic prices and led to a more hard-line Iranian regime. A shaky 10-week ceasefire preceded this agreement, which now facilitates negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, and frozen assets, prompting contributors to debate if the war was worth its costs.
