Lessons from Trump’s Reckless Iran War

The American Conservative  |  Doug Bandow

President Donald Trump's "reckless Iran War" inadvertently demonstrated the strategic imperative for closing U.S. bases in the Middle East and repatriating American forces. Despite Trump's claims of Iranian defeat, Tehran blocked global oil traffic, wrecked U.S. bases, and destroyed regional energy infrastructure. Iran retaliated against American-Israeli attacks by launching drones and missiles at U.S.

targets across the Middle East, killing soldiers and damaging military bases. The _Washington Post_ reported Iranian airstrikes damaged or destroyed at least 228 structures or equipment at U.S. military sites, forcing the evacuation of most personnel to civilian hotels and distant locations like Europe and the U.S. This significant withdrawal, a humiliating admission of vulnerability, has compelled Gulf states to fundamentally reassess their security frameworks. They are now reducing reliance on U.S. protection, seeking diverse security partners, and pursuing greater self-reliance, distancing themselves from American and Israeli hostility toward Iran. Washington should initiate military withdrawal from a region no longer critical to U.S. security.
