Fires targeting properties linked to Sir Keir Starmer were part of an extensive Russian state campaign of sabotage, provocation, and lies, the BBC has revealed. Roman Lavrynovych, a 22-year-old Ukrainian builder, was convicted of conspiring to commit arson after attacking the UK Prime Minister's house, directed by an anonymous handler identified as Evgeny Lyukshin, a 23-year-old Russian diplomat.
Lyukshin, schooled in information warfare, offered Russian citizenship for attacks and glorified President Vladimir Putin. Russian operatives remotely ran the campaign via social media and Telegram, creating fake online far-right groups like "Direct Action UK" and a bogus Islamic organization, the "Takbir Foundation." These groups were used to organize acts of vandalism, including six mosques and an Islamic school in London, stir division, and spread lies. Direct Action UK offered cash for violence and arson, while the Takbir Foundation paid non-Muslims for Islamic graffiti. Anti-racist organizations Hope Not Hate and Tell Mama reported these activities to counter-terror police, warning of potential terror attacks, but received no substantive response.
