Stepping Stones to Security: Pacifying the Tunb Islands

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps military installations on Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb near the Strait of Hormuz present a persistent threat to commercial maritime navigation that temporary air strikes cannot eliminate. Neutralizing these forward surveillance and missile garrisons requires combining targeted American military strikes with a subsequent regional administrative mechanism to prevent remilitarization.

Controlled by Tehran since 1971 despite long-standing sovereignty claims by the United Arab Emirates, the three chokepoint islands function as crucial nodes in Iran's wider coastal defense network. A post-strike arrangement led by an Arab coalition could temporarily manage civil functions and demilitarize the territory while preserving existing sovereignty claims for future diplomatic resolution. Under this posture, external United States air and naval forces would provide intelligence, surveillance, and strategic deterrence to deny Iranian reentry without creating an indefinite American occupation. Shifting long-term chokepoint security to regional Gulf states ultimately stabilizes commercial shipping lanes and limits unilateral coercion across Hormuz.

The deployment of forward sensor nodes on Abu Musa integrates directly into the IRGC Navy’s decentralised mosaic defense doctrine across the Strait of Hormuz. By feeding real-time target telemetry from coastal search radars to fast-attack craft, these island garrisons remove reliance on vulnerable long-range communications with the 5th Naval District command at Bandar Lengeh. Neutralising these outposts severs local tactical targeting loops, forcing Iranian maritime units to transition from networked target acquisition to isolated engagements.

Without continuous tracking data from Greater Tunb, mainland batteries firing Qader anti-ship cruise missiles must illuminate targets using organic search radars, exposing their positions to anti-radiation strikes.
