Chinese naval and air forces recently employed electronic warfare attacks and warnings to repel the Royal Netherlands Navy frigate HNLMS _De Ruyter_ (F804) and its embarked helicopter from the airspace over the disputed Paracel Islands on May 27, 2026. According to the People’s Liberation Army’s Southern Theater Command (PLA STC), the Dutch vessel intruded into Beijing-controlled airspace, prompting "necessary measures" in accordance with laws and regulations.
This incident highlights China's assertive posture and its advanced electronic warfare capabilities deployed across the South China Sea from artificial island bases. Senior Captain Zhai Shichen, PLA STC spokesperson, condemned the actions, demanding an immediate cessation of infringement and provocative actions, while affirming China's resolve to safeguard national sovereignty and regional stability. The _De Ruyter_ is part of Amsterdam’s five-month Pacific Archer mission, promoting freedom of navigation and fostering allied ties, and is slated for Rim of Pacific drills. This deployment, following a port visit to Manila, occurs as Beijing expands artificial island construction at Antelope Reef, potentially creating the largest island in the South China Sea, further solidifying its 10-dash line claim with paramilitary fishing vessels, Coast Guard cutters, and warships.
