The rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers is fundamentally altering critical infrastructure landscapes, creating new strategic high-value targets globally. Following the United States' and Israel's February attack on Iran, Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes that hit three Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in the UAE and Bahrain, and later an Oracle data center in Dubai, disrupting digital services and leading Iran to declare eighteen major technology companies as legitimate military targets.
These incidents signal a broader strategic shift where data centers, essential for modern digital economies and AI computing, become attractive targets for adversaries due to their fixed nature, reliance on local infrastructure, and potential for compounded effects. AI data centers, requiring immense power (up to a gigawatt for a single training run) and water, are driving the development of digital megacampuses, concentrating significant economic and military value. Defense planners must now consider these facilities as key terrain, requiring protection from sabotage, cyberattacks, and conventional military strikes, particularly in regions like Europe against potential Russian gray-zone attacks, and the Indo-Pacific, where new data center hubs in Taiwan and Malaysia could become geopolitical flashpoints.
