Iran deal presents political nightmare for Netanyahu

BBC  |  Lucy Williamson

The US ceasefire agreement with Iran has created a significant political crisis for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, undermining the three core tenets of his career. The deal has sidelined him from his key US ally, left Iran in a stronger position, and demands Israel cease attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon months before an Israeli general election.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid characterized Netanyahu's options as "either a direct and destructive confrontation with our greatest ally, or a submissive surrender of Israeli interests." US President Donald Trump criticized Netanyahu's judgment for ordering a strike on Beirut, while far-right cabinet ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir rejected the agreement, asserting Israel's right to self-protection. Netanyahu, despite admitting disagreements with Trump, affirmed his commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and preserving Israel's operational freedom. His post-7 October aggressive security policy, which has seen Israeli forces occupy parts of Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, has stretched military resources and failed to eliminate Hamas's control in half of Gaza. Analysts suggest Israel needs a renewed, more realistic strategy towards Tehran, as bypassing the White House is now limited.
