The U.S. Army And The Golden Dome Program

Eurasia Review  |  Hannah D. Dennis, Andrew Feickert

The Department of Defense is developing the Golden Dome for America, an integrated homeland air and missile defense system, initially known as Iron Dome for America, under Executive Order 14347. This "system of systems" aims to protect the United States from aerial and missile threats, with the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (ASMDC) leading operational development in support of NORTHCOM.

President Donald J. Trump introduced the program via E.O. 14186, with an estimated cost of $185 billion through 2035, though the Congressional Budget Office projects $1.2 trillion over 20 years. Key Army systems like THAAD, Patriot (with IBCS and LTAMDS) are integral, with the Army expanding Patriot battalions and integrating advanced sensors. Congress has raised concerns about insufficient information, mandatory funding requests totaling $17.1 billion in FY2027 for the Golden Dome Fund, and the lack of detailed requirements for system numbers, stationing, and personnel. The program will increase demand for specialized Air Defense Artillery and emerging space/cyber personnel, potentially involving the Army National Guard.
