Building the Army’s Human Advantage: A Vision of Readiness for the Future of Autonomous Warfare

The US Army faces a critical operational challenge in adapting its personnel management system to sustain AI-enabled autonomous warfare across tactical formations. Although investments in software, computing hardware, and tactical networks accelerate rapidly, soldiers continue to operate complex unmanned aerial systems as additional duties rather than inside dedicated professional specialties.

Operational lessons from Ukraine and the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division's deployment to US Central Command demonstrate that technological superiority depends on human capital capable of integrating autonomous capabilities into combined arms maneuver. As autonomous software assumes control over basic flight and target detection, human expertise shifts toward managing distributed data networks, validating machine-generated recommendations, and countering electronic warfare. Assigning responsibility to traditional aviation branches misaligns with small tactical assets like Group 1 drones. Creating dedicated maneuver specialists ensures organic, low-echelon integration of sensor feeds, edge processing, and strike capabilities.

Delegating the management of multi-stream sensor feeds to battalion-level command posts fundamentally alters tactical command and control architecture.
