El Niño set to be 'strongest in living memory', says Met Office

The UK Met Office has issued an urgent warning that a developing El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean could become the strongest in living memory, with ocean surface temperatures exceeding 2C above normal and potentially reaching 3C or 4C later in 2026. This natural atmospheric heating phenomenon, combined with deep-ocean warming of up to 8C at a depth of 100 metres, is very likely to make 2027 the hottest calendar year on record, surpassing 2024.

The phenomenon is already suppressing India’s southwest monsoon precipitation and Atlantic hurricane activity while significantly amplifying risks of severe drought and wildfires in northern South America and Australia, alongside flooding across Peru, Ecuador, and the southern United States.
