Iran is Overplaying its Hand

Iran is risking a devastating military escalation by launching regional attacks and disrupting critical maritime shipping despite a tacit ceasefire with the United States. These highly provocative actions, including drone and missile strikes on neighboring Arab states, threaten to trigger a massive American military response and alienate vital regional partners.

This aggressive posture stems from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps believing that Western political pressures and high oil prices limit Washington's options. However, the strategy has backfired, forcing Gulf nations to seek alternative export routes to bypass the complete control of the Strait of Hormuz. Domestically, the regime faces severe vulnerabilities, including inflation spiraling out of control and unrest after security forces killed tens of thousands of protesters last January. While an uneasy stalemate remains the most likely outcome, Tehran's overreach could ultimately trigger internal collapse or a decisive coalition intervention.

Direct combat participation by Royal Saudi Air Force F-15SA fighter jets alongside American forces against Iraqi militias signals a breakdown in Riyadh's previous policy of defensive hedging. This operational alignment suggests that Iranian drone and missile strikes have successfully overridden traditional Saudi reluctance to engage in overt regional coalition warfare. By forcing Riyadh to transition from passive air defence to active kinetic participation, Tehran has inadvertently accelerated the creation of a functional, US-led regional security architecture. Consequently, the bilateral security guarantees historically anchoring the US-Saudi relationship are translating into active, offensive interoperability directed at Iranian proxies.
