The US government intervened in a federal court case concerning xAI's Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, arguing its closure "directly threatens" national security. The NAACP filed a class action lawsuit alleging the data center's 27 gas turbines in Mississippi violate the Clean Air Act, posing health risks to nearby Black communities.
Cameron Stanley, the Department of Defense's chief digital and artificial intelligence officer, stated the data center powers the Grok Gov Model, a government-specific AI integrated into Palantir's Maven Smart System, used by the US and NATO for targeting, intelligence, readiness, and recruitment. Grok AI proved essential in Operation Epic Fury, the US-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran, enabling the deployment of over 2,000 munitions to 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours. This intervention, unusual for environmental litigation, pits national security against environmental concerns, raising questions about AI's role in warfare and the need for stringent safety guardrails, especially given Grok's commercial architecture and past controversies, and following a deadly missile strike in Iran where AI's role is under investigation.
