Exploring PRC Research on Kill Chains and Kill Webs

People's Republic of China (PRC) military and national security analysts are intensively researching and integrating advanced kill process constructs—specifically kill chains, kill webs, and kill meshes—to enhance the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) operational flexibility and target-engagement speeds. This systematic adoption of sensor-to-effector frameworks directly threatens United States forces by accelerating Chinese strike capabilities in contested environments.

Historically derived from concepts first articulated by United States Air Force General John Jumper, these target-delivery methodologies have been closely monitored by Beijing to assess their implications for modern conflict. The newly released report highlights how Chinese researchers are evaluating their own equipment, systems, and organizational structures against these evolving paradigms. As highlighted in the 2025 Department of War China Military Power report, the deployment of highly resilient algorithmic kill meshes presents an escalating challenge to Western deterrence. Consequently, understanding the PLA's progress in conceptualizing and deploying these systems remains critical for future defense planning.

The PLA's transition from linear kill chains to algorithmic kill meshes reflects a fundamental shift in Chinese operational philosophy. This evolution aligns directly with the established Chinese doctrine of System Destruction Warfare, which prioritises disrupting an adversary's command networks over attrition. By decentralising target-selection algorithms, Beijing aims to neutralise the speed advantages of Western command systems. Consequently, conflict in the Taiwan Strait will likely be decided by the resilience of these automated data-sharing networks rather than raw munition volumes.
