Israel’s operational experience as a live laboratory for artificial intelligence-enabled cognitive warfare since October 2023 reveals critical vulnerabilities in Western defense doctrines. During the June 2025 war, Iranian disinformation campaigns leveraged cheap, automated recontextualization of authentic footage to execute industrial-scale psychological attacks, exposing severe structural gaps in multilingual monitoring and rapid verification capabilities.

These narrative operations served a broader Fabian attrition strategy to compensate for conventional military inferiority after regional proxy networks collapsed. In response, the Israel Defense Forces restructured its computer service directorate to merge spectrum operations, artificial intelligence, and strategic communications under a single command named the Sphera unit. This operational adaptation relies on a distributed network integrating military intelligence with independent civil society monitors like FakeReporter to achieve rapid, authoritative truth projection. This integrated civil-military model suggests that future cognitive defense depends on societal firewalls and organizational agility rather than centralized technological detection.

India faces similar grey-zone information operations from the Chinese Information Support Force along the Line of Actual Control. Effective counter-measures require the integration of military signals intelligence with local civilian cyber security agencies. The Indian Army must establish dedicated information warfare cells within its regional commands. These units should deploy automated natural language processing tools to monitor regional vernacular media.
