Army’s AI-fusion system is ‘ready but not done’

The U.S. Army tested its $3 billion Next Generation Command and Control system during Project Convergence Capstone 6 at Fort Irwin, California. Operating across 1,000 square miles in 110-degree heat, approximately 9,700 personnel, including coalition allies from Australia, Britain, Canada, and New Zealand, evaluated over 90 military technologies in simulated urban combat.

This large-scale exercise represented a structural shift toward replacing legacy battle management equipment with commercial off-the-shelf software and hardware co-developed alongside commercial technology vendors. By integrating multi-source intelligence into a centralized data layer, the network provides real-time situational awareness and AI-assisted decision tools to tactical commanders. Officials from the 4th Infantry Division and U.S. Army Futures and Concepts Command confirmed that the architecture is operationally deployable today despite requiring ongoing software refinements. Successful field validation paves the way for the eventual force-wide adoption of this digital command network across active combat formations.
