More than 300 Italian academics from dozens of universities have launched a boycott against Israeli academic institutions, protesting the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories and alleged violations of international law. The petition, inspired by the global Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, specifically targets institutions like the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa due to its research partnerships with the Israeli military and state defence industries.
This coordinated academic campaign represents the first major institutional boycott of its kind within Italy, signalling a growing European academic backlash against Israeli state policies. Opponents of the initiative, including Italian government officials and university rectors, have strongly condemned the boycott, arguing that academic freedom and scientific collaboration should remain insulated from geopolitical conflicts. Despite this institutional opposition, organizers plan to expand their campaign across European academic networks, raising concerns over the potential long-term isolation of Israeli research institutions in international scientific communities.
