Grok and ChatGPT join Gemini in Pentagon’s enterprise genAI portal

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Starshield AI’s Grok have joined Google Cloud’s Gemini on the Pentagon’s GenAI.mil platform, expanding secure commercial generative artificial intelligence access to over 3 million defense personnel. Both frontier models achieved Impact Level 5 authorization, enabling the processing of non-public, sensitive unclassified data across planning, logistics, and administrative workflows.

The integration advances military adoption of high-capacity large language models across unclassified defense enterprises. It follows a contractual dispute that led the Pentagon to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk after the firm requested restrictions against mass surveillance and autonomous weapon usage. Anthropic remains excluded from the system. Under the new rollout, personnel gain access to OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 Terra model—with planned upgrades to GPT-5.6 Terra—alongside Starshield AI’s Grok for Government, which features deep-thinking inference and specialized reasoning modes.
