A Trump Deal With Iran Could Spell Trouble for Netanyahu

Foreign Policy  |  Aaron David Miller, Daniel C. Kurtzer

U.S. President Donald Trump consistently employs a "bully pulpit" strategy, threatening adversaries and allies with severe consequences to achieve his objectives. This approach has yielded mixed results, such as compelling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a 20-point Gaza peace plan in October 2025 after Trump threatened to withdraw support.

However, it failed to sway Europeans on Greenland or pressure Iran into accepting U.S. deal terms. Recently, Trump threatened Oman with military action, stating he would "blow them up" if the country's leaders crossed him on the Strait of Hormuz. He also publicly asserted that Netanyahu "will do whatever I want," a statement unprecedented from a U.S. president regarding an Israeli leader. A potential Trump deal with Iran could significantly complicate Netanyahu's political standing, particularly as he faces a crucial election, spelling trouble for the Israeli leader.
