Iran Embraces a Forever War

Foreign Affairs  |  Mohammad Ayatollahi Tabaar

For the past two months, Iran and the United States have engaged in intermittent and ultimately unsuccessful peace negotiations. These discussions followed a very shaky cease-fire agreement established in early April. Throughout this period, officials from both nations exchanged and subsequently rejected various long-term proposals, indicating a fundamental disagreement on the terms for a lasting resolution.

Despite initial announcements suggesting proximity to a deal, these diplomatic efforts were repeatedly undermined by reciprocal military actions, specifically volleys of drones and missiles. This pattern of negotiation and escalation highlights a persistent state of tension and conflict. Former President Trump, commenting on reports of Iran discontinuing talks, expressed indifference, remarking that the discussions had "started to get very boring." This statement underscores the perceived futility and lack of substantive progress in the bilateral dialogue, suggesting a stalemate where neither side is willing or able to achieve a breakthrough, perpetuating an environment of ongoing low-level conflict.
