'Crazy' phone call between Trump and Netanyahu complicates Iran talks

Donald Trump reportedly called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "effing crazy" and ungrateful during a Monday phone call, a claim Trump confirmed on the Pod Force One podcast. This reported clash stemmed from Israel's military actions in Lebanon, which prompted Tehran to threaten suspending ongoing talks with the US.

The incident complicates Trump's efforts to secure a deal extending the US-Iran ceasefire, open discussions on Iran's nuclear program, and ensure the reopening of the vital Strait of Hormuz. Experts suggest the disagreement reflects White House frustration over diverging US and Israeli military and political objectives, especially Israel's continued targeting of Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon while US-Iran talks proceed. A recent Pew Research Poll indicated 60% of Americans now view Israel negatively, creating domestic political pressure for Trump to distance himself from Netanyahu's actions. Despite this, their overall relationship has been largely positive, with both leaders aligned on confronting the "Iran axis."
