A joint military campaign launched by the United States and Israel against Iran has resulted in at least 1,700 Iranian civilian deaths, including 307 children, alongside extensive damage to civilian infrastructure across the region. Subsequent Iranian retaliatory strikes killed 18 U.S. service members and wounded more than 600 personnel stationed at bases in neighboring sovereign countries.

The abrupt closure of the maritime trade route through the Strait of Hormuz triggered immediate global financial disruptions and severe spikes in energy prices. This escalation illustrates how deep military entanglements in the region fail to deliver lasting security or protect core international interests. Over 35 years of persistent military interventions have systematically heightened vulnerability while straining overall defense capacity. Consequently, the strategic outcome of Operation Epic Fury demonstrates the broader failure of forward-deployed deterrence models, reinforcing arguments for a fundamental realignment of foreign policy and a long-overdue military withdrawal from the Middle East.

The physical restriction of the Strait of Hormuz exposes the vulnerability of relying on narrow maritime chokepoints for energy transit. Anti-ship capabilities around the Persian Gulf restrict merchant transit and force surface combatants into high-threat littoral zones. Disruptions of this scale erode combat power by diverting escort assets from offensive strikes to convoy protection. Consequently, maritime bottleneck vulnerabilities in the Persian Gulf limit the duration of sustained forward power projection.
