Ukraine’s Air Force has transitioned to a majority Western fighter fleet as combined F-16 and Mirage 2000 numbers surpass remaining MiG-29s and Su-27s. According to Defense Express on October 13, Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara confirmed that Western jets now dominate combat aviation operations. These aircraft are actively intercepting fast-moving Russian jet-powered Shahed-type drones as part of an expanding layered air defense.
Soviet-era platforms like the MiG-29 continue flying combat sorties alongside Western airframes. However, shrinking munitions stocks and maintenance constraints challenge long-term fleet sustainability. Officials plan future operations around the growing F-16 and Mirage inventory as older Soviet airframes face eventual attrition.
Integrating F-16 and Mirage 2000 airframes into a wartime command structure creates distinct logistical friction across maintenance and ordnance pipelines. Ground crews accustomed to Soviet-era diagnostics on MiG-29 platforms face unfamiliar avionics architectures and specialized tooling requirements. This transition alters sortie generation rates while technicians adapt to Western maintenance schedules.
