Russia Deploys New Volna Kupol Garant EW Systems to Jam Starlink, Ukraine Already Destroying Them

Russia has deployed new Volna-Kupol-Garant electronic warfare (EW) systems to counter the Starlink satellite communication system in Ukraine, as reported by Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Minister of Defense. These trailer-mounted systems, costing RUB 150 million each, track satellites and emit powerful signals in the 14-14.5 GHz range, capable of destabilizing Starlink communications over an area of up to 20 square kilometers with a blocking range of 16 kilometers.

Designed for a single operator and remote control, one system creates a protective dome with a 3-4 kilometer radius around critical infrastructure or logistics nodes. However, these systems have significant drawbacks: SpaceX instantly detects interference, and partner countries' radio reconnaissance satellites quickly locate the powerful radiation, simplifying target detection. Ukrainian Defense Forces are actively finding and destroying these EW systems using drones, forcing Russia to scale up deployment to counter Ukrainian drone operations against Russian logistics in the south. On June 15, the 422nd Regiment of Unmanned Systems and the Special Operations Center "A" of the Security Service of Ukraine in the southern direction destroyed a Starlink jamming station, hitting six deployed system vehicles with strike drones.
