The new Marine Scout career field is officially here

Task & Purpose  |  Jeff Schogol

The Marine Corps is establishing a new primary military occupational specialty (MOS) for scouts, designated as 0315, effective October 1. This new career field will create "26-Marine Scout Platoons" within infantry battalions and "Scout Teams" in light armored reconnaissance battalions. These scout units will be equipped with advanced optics, communications equipment, and drones to conduct reconnaissance and surveillance missions.

Each team will also include a Joint Fires Observer to coordinate air and artillery strikes. Lt. Gen. Jay M. Bargeron, deputy commandant for plans, policies, and operations, stated that this "purpose-built force" will provide commanders with essential organic reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, extending sensing capabilities and enabling faster, more effective decision-making on the future battlefield. Marine Maj. Gen. Michael A. Brooks previously indicated that scouts would likely attend a new Ground Reconnaissance Course to receive this PMOS. Retired Lt. Col. Worth Parker clarified that scouts typically operate closer to the forward edge of the battle area compared to Reconnaissance Marines, who operate at greater distances.
