Google Director of Android Platform Security, Rene Mayrhofer, resigned from the company, citing ethical concerns over a controversial Pentagon AI deal that he believes contradicts CEO Sundar Pichai's stated AI principles. Mayrhofer, a self-identified pacifist, stated in his resignation letter that Google management "has lost its moral compass" by signing deals with the "US Ministry of War" for "any lawful purpose," which he asserts has been repeatedly demonstrated to violate international laws.
This decision follows heavy internal backlash, including an open letter signed by over 600 employees in 2018, demanding Google not to pursue classified AI work with the US Department of Defense. Mayrhofer highlighted Pichai's 2018 AI principles, which explicitly reject AI applications for weapons, surveillance violating international norms, or technologies contravening international law and human rights. He expressed concern that the "lawful purpose" clause could facilitate mass surveillance targeting EU citizens.
