A Quantum Public-Private Leap for America

Real Clear Defense  |  Elise Stefanik

President Trump's administration recently announced a $2 billion Department of Commerce investment into America's quantum computing sector, including direct equity stakes, marking a critical turning point in the global race for technological supremacy. This initiative elevates quantum technology to a strategic national priority, essential for U.S. economic strength, military dominance, and national security.

Quantum computing, leveraging qubits for unprecedented processing power, is vital for logistics, AI, cybersecurity, and defense, with leading nations shaping the 21st-century strategic balance. Congress, through the National Quantum Initiative Act and Defense Quantum Acceleration Act, established frameworks and a Principal Quantum Advisor within the Department of War to accelerate quantum technology transition. Investments in facilities like the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, New York, have fostered a national quantum ecosystem, leading to operational deployments such as IonQ's trapped-ion quantum networking system. These efforts, including partnerships with PsiQuantum and Interlune for critical materials, aim to ensure America designs, manufactures, and deploys future defining technologies domestically, countering the Chinese Communist Party's advancements and maintaining superiority.
