Sustained Neighbours: The Impact of Afghanistan's Transition Process on Conflict in Pakistan

2 February 2016

This brief looks at how the multiple transition processes currently underway in Afghanistan are affecting "peace and conflict dynamics" in Pakistan. More specifically, it 1) provides a historical overview of Afghanistan-Pakistan relations; 2) describes the political, security, and economic transitions that Afghanistan is currently going through; 3) examines the potential impact of these transitions on three aspects of Pakistani life -- the radicalization of its young, the large numbers of Afghan refugees living within its borders, and India-Pakistan relations; 4) identifies a number of potential "entry points" for promoting peace between the two countries; and 5) recommends ways that Pakistan's civil society and its international partners can maximize their potential contribution to a sustainable regional peace.
