Here is SIPRI’s data-rich synopsis of global military expenditures for 2016. Unsurprisingly, the numbers remain sobering – i.e., the world’s total outlays reached an estimated $1686 billion or $227 per person. The good news, however, is that 1) after thirteen consecutive years of increases (from 1998 to 2011), world military spending has continued to plateau, and 2) the fall in oil prices has led to substantial decreases in this type of spending by oil-exporting countries. Read on for more data, including who were the biggest military spenders during the year and how the expenditures broke down by region.
