Four Myths About MAGA

Real Clear Defense  |  Christopher J. Little

The 2025 National Security Strategy, 2026 National Defense Strategy, and 2026 U.S. Counterterrorism Strategy define "MAGA" as a codified doctrine, refuting common mischaracterizations. These documents demonstrate that MAGA is not isolationist, citing eight mediated regional conflicts, including between Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, and ending the Gaza war, alongside operations like Midnight Hammer against Iran's nuclear program and Absolute Resolve against NicolΓ‘s Maduro.

The NDS rejects bellicosity, prioritizing peace and focused action, not humiliation, and outlines principled strikes like those on Iran. Furthermore, the NSS establishes a precise, narrowed national interest, rejecting the post-Cold War expansion of interests, which critics misinterpret as incoherence. The existence of these signed, debated, and implemented documents, which prescribe actions and define methodologies, proves MAGA is a generalizable doctrine, not merely a reflection of President Trump's personality or whim, allowing for implementation independent of his direct presence.
