Opinion – The Need for a More Assertive Diplomatic Stance from China on Iran

Iran's conflict with the United States and Israel has devolved into a stalemate, with both the U.S. and Israel facing significant challenges and diplomatic isolation. China, despite extensive economic ties with Iran, including 80% of its oil exports, maintains a passive diplomatic stance.

This approach reflects China's distinctive diplomacy, prioritizing flexible economic alliances and resource allocation for growth over security commitments. China's pragmatism focuses on upholding agreements with the Iranian state, not necessarily the regime's survival, while keeping options open for leadership changes. Geopolitically, China benefits from U.S. weakening in the Middle East, analyzing military tactics, and strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia, with implications for Taiwan. However, this caution risks alienating more economically vital partners like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Ultimately, China's current stance could hinder its long-term growth by disrupting global economic stability and its trade networks, necessitating a more assertive diplomatic approach to protect its interests and reassure allies.
