SCSP | Senator Mike Rounds, Senator Mark Warner, Chris Malachowsky, Ylli Bajraktari
The United States stands at a critical juncture regarding artificial intelligence (AI), a general-purpose technology rapidly reshaping the American workforce with unprecedented speed and scope. This preliminary report from the Task Force on AI and the Future of Work assesses AI's profound implications, noting its potential for new discoveries alongside significant challenges to how knowledge, skills, and careers are developed.
Preliminary findings indicate AI is not mere automation, but a force with unpredictable impacts on labor and economic security, showing signs of increased U.S. productivity yet also pressure on AI-exposed occupations, particularly entry-level roles. The report emphasizes that AI's impact is task-level, necessitating new data collection strategies and a shift in skill demands towards digital, technical, and durable human capabilities like critical thinking. Traditional educational pathways are deemed insufficient, requiring reimagination. The Task Force advocates for proactive, coordinated "whole-of-nation" action across government, industry, and education to ensure AI augments workers and broadly distributes its benefits, rather than concentrating them, before the window for intervention closes.
