General Wang Haijiang assumed command of the People’s Liberation Army’s Western Theater Command (WTC) in September 2021, simultaneously promoted to General, making him a top operational commander responsible for China’s vast western frontier, including Tibet and Xinjiang. Wang is a combat veteran, having participated in the Sino-Vietnamese border conflict as a company commander in 1986, where he earned a First-Class Merit Citation for bravery during the Laoshan rotation campaign.
His 9th Company, 182nd Regiment, was heavily engaged in operations, including the "34-1 Project" attack on Position 55, and was awarded the "Assault Hero Company" title. Following a battlefield promotion, Wang's career progressed through the Lanzhou Military Region, commanding the 61st Division, and serving as Deputy Commander of the South Xinjiang and Tibet Military Districts. His extensive frontier experience and participation in exercises like "Hand in Hand 2016" with India underscore his role in the PLA's modernization and strategic command.
