India’s Persian Gulf Diplomacy Is Churlish

Eurasia Review  |  M.K. Bhadrakumar

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conducted a strategic visit to Bahrain immediately following the funeral of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, highlighting New Delhi's precarious balancing act between Tehran and the United States-led regional security architecture. This diplomatic maneuvering occurred as Tehran largely ignored the attending Indian delegation.

Historically deep civilizational and cultural ties between the two nations are increasingly strained by New Delhi's strategic alignment with the Israel-UAE-Bahrain axis and its compliance with American sanctions. Consequently, India continues to forfeit direct purchases of Iranian oil, leaving it vulnerable to volatile spot markets while Islamabad and Tehran steadily build a robust mutual understanding that threatens to bypass Indian efforts at regional isolation. Ultimate resolution of these diplomatic tensions remains suspended until the conclusion of the Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27, 2026, as Indian leadership awaits the political fate of Benjamin Netanyahu.
