Why Analytic Superiority Matters Most in the AI Race

National Interest | Emily O. Goldman, and Robert L. Grossman

The United States is currently engaged in a critical geopolitical race for analytic superiority against adversaries rapidly deploying artificial intelligence models at scale. This competition requires prioritizing the systematic analysis, deployment, and integration of data-driven models into military systems over merely chasing the most powerful frontier models.

Historically, operational advantages have stemmed from processing in-theater data rapidly, a dynamic highlighted by the National Security Agency's success against improvised explosive devices in Iraq. A January 9, 2026 memo from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth emphasized AI model parity, yet true superiority relies on the Analytic Diamond framework, which balances models, operations, infrastructure, and strategy. To counter adversaries like China, which currently leads in diffusion density and model integration, American defense planners must shift focus toward smaller, specialized, and highly distilled models. Ultimately, integrating these agile systems into operational workflows will secure a decisive advantage and prevent strategic surprise on the modern battlefield.
