Global Security At A Crossroads: Persistent Conflicts, Technological Transformation And The Emerging Geopolitical Order

Eurasia Review  |  J. Scott Younger

Iran has unblocked the Straits of Hormuz to resume vital oil trade, yet the broader global security landscape remains highly volatile as asymmetric warfare technologies redefine modern conflict. Advanced drone systems and precision missiles, heavily utilized in Ukraine, are fundamentally altering traditional military doctrines and enabling smaller actors to challenge established powers.

These rapid operational shifts coincide with long-term structural changes, including the historical decline of European empires, the rise of the United Nations, and unprecedented global population growth projected to peak at 12 billion by 2080. Consequently, rising greenhouse gas emissions and resource competition exacerbate localized instabilities, such as Myanmar's escalating civil war where the military junta relies on Russian and Chinese backing to secure strategic trade corridors. Meanwhile, protracted stalemates persist as Russia faces mounting losses after four years of war there, and the United States struggles to resolve its enduring standoff with Tehran.
