Iran has developed a sophisticated information strategy, employing satirical memes, AI-generated videos, and sarcastic social media responses to counter the United States. This approach, exemplified by jocular retorts to President Trump's threats and popular Lego-inspired AI videos depicting U.S. defeat, aims to undermine U.S. soft power abroad and increase domestic reticence for military action.
This "trolling" strategy is culturally savvy, algorithmically adept, and resistant to traditional counter-messaging like fact-checking or deepfake detection, posing a significant challenge for Washington. Other actors, like China, may adopt similar tactics. The U.S. needs to understand this threat in real-time, disrupt covert networks, harness truthful information to expose Iranian repression, and renew its own soft power by honestly addressing its challenges. Covert influence campaigns by the U.S. should be avoided due to their corrosive effect on truth and high reputational costs.
