The war in Ukraine has now surpassed the duration of World War I, reaching 1,569 days, or over four years and three months, as of Thursday. This milestone was once considered unthinkable, especially after President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia initially believed Ukraine would fall within days in February 2022.
The conflict quickly evolved into a grinding war of attrition, with many participants, including a Ukrainian soldier identified by the call sign France, initially expecting it to last only two or three years before a political consensus. However, peace talks remain stalled, and the war shows no immediate signs of ending. Polls indicate that approximately half of Ukrainians anticipate the conflict will continue beyond next year, potentially approaching the six-year duration of World War II. Some Ukrainians also argue the war fundamentally began in 2014 with Russia's seizure of Crimea.
