Ukraine has taught the world how to kill again

Ukraine's conflict with Russia has now surpassed the duration of the First World War, lasting 1,569 days, a threshold unthinkable at its outset on February 24, 2022. Military experts, like Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, draw clear parallels between the two conflicts, noting similar principles of war despite vastly changed capabilities.

Approximately 500,000 troops have died in Ukraine, with 700,000 injured or missing, compared to Russia's estimated 1.8 million WWI losses. Both wars created stalemates due to rapid weapons development; machine guns in WWI and drones in Ukraine. Ukraine's front line has moved less than 19 miles since mid-2022, mirroring the Western Front's 31-mile movement. Ukraine has innovated with autonomous drone swarms, sea drones, and a new military branch, effectively neutralizing Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Russia, like late-war Germany, suffers high casualties (1,000 daily) from poorly trained conscripts. Future warfare is expected to feature autonomous tanks and AI-guided drone swarms, with air defense paramount. Ukraine currently holds an advantage in drone production (four million annually) and electromagnetic spectrum dominance, sharing expertise with allies.
