President Donald Trump has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran, aiming to end the conflict initiated on February 28, 2026, by US and Israeli air strikes against Tehran. This MoU, a framework for 60 days of talks, differs significantly from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The new agreement lacks specific limitations on Iran's nuclear program, only reaffirming Iran "shall not procure or develop nuclear weapons" and deferring enrichment and stockpile disposition to future negotiations, unlike the JCPOA which restricted enrichment to 3.67% and a 300kg stockpile. The MoU also omits mention of ballistic missiles. Economically, the US will terminate all sanctions, immediately issuing waivers for Iranian oil exports and committing "at least $300bn" for Iran's reconstruction. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the US will end its naval blockade within 30 days, while Iran will ensure safe passage for 60 days, subsequently planning to charge "fees" through its new Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a move not addressed by the deal.
