Brits May Soon Say Goodbye to an Anonymous Internet

Persuasion  |  Sarah McLaughlin

The United Kingdom recently unveiled a new policy mandating age verification to restrict social media access for children under 16, with 16- and 17-year-olds facing an overnight curfew and younger teens unable to access live streaming. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's "Australia-plus" initiative, despite Australia's ban failing to prevent 7 in 10 children from retaining accounts, aims to make bypassing safeguards harder.

This policy, however, will compel all UK citizens, regardless of age, to prove their identity to post online, significantly eroding vital firewalls around user anonymity and free speech. The UK joins a global trend, with Germany and Turkey also pushing to end online anonymity. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall announced future statements on potentially age-gating VPN use, a tactic often used in deeply censored societies to restrict access to vital information. The article argues that these "child safety" rules burden adults and risk the UK "sleepwalking into an unfree internet," advocating for parental empowerment over blanket censorship.
