If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It

Cheap drones, ubiquitous sensors, and precision-guided munitions have temporarily paralyzed traditional offensive maneuvers, forcing modern military forces to operate on a hyper-lethal, transparent battlefield. This rapid technological shift has inverted the historical supremacy of the offense, forcing attackers into unsustainable, high-cost wars of attrition against deeply fortified, decentralized defensive positions worldwide.

Historically, breakthroughs relied on secrecy and concentrated armor, but persistent low-Earth orbit satellite constellations and real-time signals intelligence have virtually eliminated the fog of war. Dismantling this defensive paradigm requires exploiting vulnerabilities like cognitive data overload, electromagnetic dependency, and fragile high-tech supply chains. Deploying vast autonomous swarms to saturate sensors, executing high-powered electronic warfare to restore tactical blindness, and integrating hypersonic strike networks can compress defensive reaction windows. Ultimately, transitioning to manned-unmanned teaming allows commanders to mass devastating operational effects without exposing high-value human assets to lethal engagement zones on the ground.

The successful deployment of Ukrainian Magura V5 uncrewed surface vessels against the Russian Black Sea Fleet demonstrates the operational shift from concentrated naval platforms to distributed, low-cost kinetic swarms. The resulting denial of access in the western Black Sea illustrates how cheap, satellite-guided strike craft can neutralise legacy naval power without a single conventional fleet engagement. This shift forces a revision of classic maritime doctrines, such as those established by Alfred Thayer Mahan, which historically prioritised decisive fleet-on-fleet actions over distributed sea denial. Consequently, the operational utility of large surface combatants in enclosed seas is increasingly compromised by the rapid cycle of uncrewed software updates and low-cost production lines.
