Ukraine Just Unveiled a New Interceptor Drone Called the ‘Jetkiller’ — Built to Hunt Down Russia’s Fast New Jet-Powered Shaheds

National Security Journal  |  Brandon J. Weichert

Ukraine is rapidly developing high-speed interceptor drones to counter Russia's deployment of fast, jet-powered Shahed variants that threaten to bypass existing air defenses. These new Russian systems, which make up nearly 20 percent of Moscow's Shahed fleet, reach speeds of 310 miles per hour, severely compressing defensive reaction times.

To bridge this capability gap, Ukrainian manufacturers are introducing specialized platforms like SkyFall's P1-SUN "Jetkiller," which is scheduled for mass production in August 2026. Other domestic firms are upgrading existing designs, such as General Cherry's Bullet and Firebolt Engineering's jet-powered Griffen, to achieve interception speeds between 350 and 500 kilometers per hour. These innovations aim to preserve the favorable cost-exchange ratio of drone-on-drone warfare, preventing the depletion of expensive surface-to-air missiles against cheap targets. Ultimately, the outcome of this technological race will depend on which side can scale production of these specialized systems most affordably.

Comment
The deployment of the P1-SUN Jetkiller directly targets the cost-asymmetry of Russian Shahed-136 strikes. By replacing million-dollar Patriot or NASAMS interceptors with sub-ten-thousand-dollar unmanned platforms, Kyiv alters the financial sustainability of its air defence network. This transition to expendable kinetic interceptors like the Griffen mitigates defensive depletion during massed Russian raids. Long-term viability of Ukrainian airspace denial now hinges on industrial capacity to mass-produce these cheap platforms.
