Xi Purges Six More PLA Generals

Chinese President Xi Jinping has purged six high-ranking People’s Liberation Army generals to dismantle patronage networks associated with former Central Military Commission vice chairman Zhang Youxia. This sweeping action targets previously insulated sectors, including the PLA Air Force and the Western Theater Command, prioritizing political loyalty over combat experience.

The systemic restructuring occurs as the official PLA Daily declared 2026 the 'year of decisive battle' against deep-seated graft. Among those removed are Equipment Development Department head Xu Xueqiang, Air Force political commissar Guo Puxiao, and Cyberspace Force commander Zhang Minghua. Additionally, the ongoing disappearance of Western Theater Command leaders, including Sino-Vietnamese War veteran Wang Haijiang, highlights a critical loss of rare operational combat expertise. By appointing Zhang Shuguang as the new discipline chief before filling other vacancies, the administration signals that internal security and anti-graft investigations remain its highest strategic priorities, even at the expense of immediate military readiness.

The Western Theater Command directly oversees the disputed borders with India. Frequent leadership churn in this sector disrupts operational continuity and local command stability. New commanders may adopt more aggressive postures to prove their political loyalty to Beijing.
